Dr. Satoshi Fukushima lost his sight at the age of nine and became totally deaf at the age of 18. He currently is a deaf-blind researcher at the University of Tokyo focusing on social and psychological aspects of deaf-blind persons.
In 1987 he became the first deaf-blind person in Japan to graduate from college and in 2001 he became the first deaf-blind professor at Tokyo University. In 2008 he became the first deaf-blind person in Japan to obtain a doctorate.
He is able to communicate using “finger-Braille”, a communication method developed by his mother. “Finger-Braille” is now being used by other deaf-blind persons in Japan.
He will discuss his life experiences, the development of the “finger-Braille” system, and the significance of human communication and possibilities of communication potential from the perspective of a deaf-blind person.
A discussion session will occur at the same location from 2:30-3:30pm.
